Then it jumps back to Max and Duke and Rooster at the farm, then to Gidget trying to get Busy Bee back, then to Daisy and Snowball freeing Hu, but having to deal with Sergei (looking very much like the Wicked Witch of the West) and his snarling, Russian-accented wolves. Also in New York, Daisy approaches Snowball, asking for his help to rescue Hu (a non-speaker), a defenseless white tiger cub that has been purchased by the ruthless and evil circus man Sergei (Nick Kroll). Back in New York, Gidget has been asked to take care of Max’s favorite toy, Busy Bee, which she accidentally drops into an apartment full of creepy cats. It’s there that Max and Duke meet the crusty farm dog named Rooster (Harrison Ford, showing off great delivery of the film’s best lines - obviously written with him in mind), and adventures are shared.
It’s the trip to the farm that triggers things, that initiates the film’s split into three unrelated stories. And there’s a newcomer, the brave and pushy Daisy the dog (Tiffany Haddish). In fact, the whole family is happily heading out for vacation at an uncle’s farmīut what about all those other pets from the first film back in New York? Let’s see, Snowball the bunny (Kevin Hart) believes he’s destined to be a superhero, excitable Gidget the dog (Jenny Slate) is attracted to metaphorical “shiny objects,” Chloe the cat (Lake Bell) knows the only important being on the planet is Chloe the cat. And wouldn’t you know it? Liam gets a little older, he and Max become best of pals, and all is fine. If only Max would listen to Duke (Eric Stonestreet), the goofy, carefree other dog in the family, and just mellow out. The sequel revisits positive-minded Max (now voiced by Patton Oswalt, since Louis C.K., who did it originally, is now deemed too controversial), who has developed some stress problems related to the fact that his owner Katie has gotten married and now there’s a baby named Liam and, well, things have changed.
And the substance problem remained intact.
But the kids laughed from beginning to end (except for a few scary moments when good guy pets were briefly periled by bad guy predators). I made a hashmark on my notepad every time I laughed by the end of the 86-minute film, there were nine of them. So, in the manner of giving credit where it’s due, at a recent preview screening of “The Secret Life of Pets 2,” I was in the minority - one of a scattered bunch of adults mixed into an audience full of excited young kids.
